AWARD-WINNING PROJEC : To enlarge her bookshop, Le Monde d'Arthur, in Meaux.
A smile lights up the face of Sandrine Gauzère. That's unusual for a bookseller. Two years since it was set up, Le Monde d'Arthur is about to expand. The economic situation is difficult but Sandrine is as committed as ever. Booksellers have a perilous occupation which resembles more a vocation. Sandrine is driven by promoting books, defending writers, supporting literature and getting children interested in reading. She is happy to take a bet and thrives on challenges. But Sandrine is neither easily put off nor the type of person to lose heart. It must be said that her plans have followed a certain logic. When asked as a teenager about what she wanted to do in life, she did not have a clue. She read a lot and went to the library: was there something here? "I wouldn't mind being a bookseller", she told her parents. With her mind made up, she spent her free time working in a bookshop in Chartres. She enjoyed everything to do with the job, even gift wrapping. After studying business studies and economics for her baccalauréat she took a librarian diploma course in Nanterre. Sandrine has an unquenchable thirst for everything - just visit her bookshop to see for yourself. 6,600 titles in areas as diverse as children's and contemporary literature, historical novels and even a small shelf dedicated to child psychology. The bookshop never stands still and is always welcoming. "I want customers to feel happy in my bookshop, as if they were at home," she says. Sandrine welcomes each of her customers as if a friend. "I have always been surprised to see booksellers who are not very friendly and who are unpredictable; bookshops that you dare not enter." This most probably encouraged her to become her own boss. "I don't like to be ordered about," she acknowledges laughing. In her bookshop, she decides on everything and is always smiling. It is a frame of mind. Her energy would leave a lot of people reeling. She always has an event for children in mind, such as inviting a writer to the shop. She knows how to live and let others live literature. During her free time she forms part of a reading club to defend works and also to discover new ones. "It is a way of sharing what we love", she summarises. Her occupation is no longer a job but a passion. Le Monde d’Arthur has not stopped growing.
Three questions to Sandrine Gauzère
Ideally, which book should always be close to the counter?
All of them! I am particularly attached to high-quality illustrated books, which unfortunately do not stay on the shelves for long and are often published as limited editions.
What is your first literary memory?
Voyage au pays des arbres, (Journey to the land of trees) by Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio. I was still at primary school!
What does the grant mean to you?
The grant means that the bookshop's expansion will become a reality. I have just signed the contract to rent a new 80 m2 shop!
A word from the jury Chairman Jean-Marie Sevestre - Director of the bookshop, Sauramps
"Sandrine Gauzère defends our profession with a great deal of enthusiasm. She is alone in a suburb providing people with a real offer. Her project to expand was necessary and deserved the Foundation's support."
