AWARD-WINNING PROJECT: To produce Les années sauvages, Simon Moutaïrou's feature-length
Catherine Bozorgan has been run off her feet over the past few months. She is in the middle of filming and is either on a train, on set or at her office. She is producing Albert Dupontel's next film in which Catherine Frot also stars. The cast is impressive. Filming started in September. Catherine is delighted without being euphoric: "It's thrilling to work with Albert Dupontel. He is one of few producers who offer a vision of the world and develop an original environment." Catherine does not enjoy talking about herself and is quick to change the subject of conversation. She brings up her fellow adventurers: Simon Moutaïrou and Julien Ralanto. They met while at university where each of them had other plans: to produce films. "As we did not have any family in the industry, we thought it was going to be impossible", recalls Catherine. But she is not the sort of person who loses heart quickly. In the university's directory of former students, she spotted two names: Pierre Forette and Thierry Wong (film producer grant winners in 1997). She jumped at her chance: Catherine contacted them on the pretext of a report on the world of business. Pierre and Thierry were the only ones in the company but they agreed to see her and even went as far as to offer Catherine work experience. She acknowledges that it was a special encounter. One feels that she owes a lot to these two men who let her consolidate her desire to make films. She spent three years with them and took on many responsibilities inside their firm: from SOFICA (France's tax break scheme for films) to managing the post-production of the film Président with Albert Dupontel... An artistic trust immediately bound Dupontel and Catherine. The producer/actor asked her to be involved in his next film. Such an offer could neither be taken lightly nor turned down. Catherine was fully aware of the situation. It was time to take the plunge: she set up Manchester Films. Her two faithful friends whom she can trust were not far away. "Together, we are a great team!" says Catherine. A team that came together over a joint project: Les Années sauvages, a Romanesque portrait of France's suburbs between 1969 and 2005. It was an ambitious project that they have taken by the horns.
Three questions to Catherine Bozorgan
Which film would you have liked to produce?
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, by Michel Gondry. But I am very happy with Albert Dunpontel!
What would a film's ideal cast be?
Albert Dupontel and Catherine Frot, of course.
What does the grant mean to you?
The grant has given me my freedom and independence.
A word from the jury chairman, Pierre Lescure, producer.
"Catherine Bozorgan is one of the most outstanding people that we have seen in years. We are always reticent when people already have some experience. However, with Catherine we are convinced that the grant will not serve just as a boost but will also constitute an essential stage in a brilliant career."
