AWARD-WINNING PROJECT: to finish recording their second album.
Like many youngsters, Benjamin Ledauphin, Cédric Moutier, Yoann Buffeteau and Mathieu Languille played music in their parents' cellar or garage. While many people are happy with copying songs by groups in fashion, the four members - the fifth joined the group later on - sang and played their own songs with a pop-rock feel. After finishing their baccalauréat, they left their home town of Laval and headed with their instruments on their backs to Rennes, an important meeting point for musicians. Soon after, a studio welcomed them in and they left behind the lecture hall to focus on their music. It was during a practice session that they met Thomas Poli, the group's missing member. The five-member group had been formed. Benjamin Ledauphin writes and sings the overtly naive lyrics. "At the outset, we decided to sing in French," explains Mathieu Languille, the group's drummer. "It's a challenge: the person's voice becomes an instrument in its own right." Cédric Moutier plays bass. He also looks after stage scenery at concerts. Yoann Buffeteau plays the piano and the drums; also a graphic designer, he designs the record sleeves and posters. The fifth member, Thomas Poli, is the group's arranger. After two years spent composing, giving concerts and a lot of patience, the group found a studio, penniless, but with the desire to create something. Nine months down the line and a first album is born: 13 tracks which are the outcome of a lot of trial and error and accidents with a happy ending. The first album caught somebody's eye, new people were met, and Montgomery signed with the Naïve label while "À Gauche de la lune" took care of organising concerts. One concert followed another. But the five friends wanted to move on. They went back to the studio to record a second album. A year later, they have just come out of the studio. "I want a place among the stars" sings Benjamin Ledauphin. Montgomery will definitely have a place among the rising stars of the music world.

3 questions to Montgomery
With which unlikely group would you like to perform as the first act?
"The Beatles"
With whom would you agree to go on stage?
"With Grizly Bear, and we are in fact going to do so soon."
What does the grant mean to you?
"It will let us move on to an essential stage: mixing. We were exhausted and we are now going to be able to calmly bring this new project to a close."
A word from the jury chairman Marc Thonon, chairman Label Atmospheriques
"This year, with this new and bigger jury, it was important to encourage talent by allowing Montgomery to take a decisive step forward in their career: to increase their visibility without suffering from any commercial pressure."
