The 21-year-old Gasquet focuses mainly on young people who lack confidence and are struggling to find their place in society.
“I was lucky to be surrounded by great people who helped me become an accomplished tennis player at a very early age,” He says. “I realize that not all young people have that chance, but they all have talent and potential worth developing.”
The foundation’s initial budget is €200,000 over three years, thanks to support from its founder, Richard Gasquet, as well as the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation and other contributors to the project.
Support for Salvator Hospital, directed by Marcel Rufo
After a four-year stint as director of the Solenn-Maison youth centre in Paris, professor Marcel Rufo came back to Marseille to reorganize Salvator Hospital into a consultation centre and clinic for young people. The only one of its kind in Europe, this hospital will provide sports-medicine treatment along with other care for youths. Sports facilities will be installed gradually. The first clinic visits are scheduled for the end of March 2008.
“Sports are therapeutic, and Richard Gasquet is an idol to teens,” says Marcel Rufo. “His presence and support bring hope.”
Gasquet will make an initial donation of €50,000 to the hospital and, in particular, will sponsor the cultural and sports programmes developed by Marcel Rufo as part of the care and monitoring offered to young people.
La Friche la Belle de Mai’s sports programme
Situated between the harbour and north end of Marseille, la Belle de Mai brings the city together. Located in the old Seita factories, La Friche has been producing artistic endeavours for several years with cooperation from the community’s schools and associations. Next summer, it will open up to include sports, with introductory martial-arts programmes and a trail to link the various cultural areas on this huge site.
Richard Gasquet will sponsor this new programme, which aims to foster social unity through sports, with an initial €20,000 donation.
