For the second consecutive year, the Fondation Jean-Luc Lagardère has joined the Maremonti organisation in setting up projects alongside an ecologically-responsible race.
A race on foot is a great idea. Especially when held in areas that are out of bounds to mechanical engines.
The idea was initiated by former triathlete Christophe Vatinel and its principle is simple: to follow a track running through a natural environment and to support locals whilst doing so, with an international network of nature races from sea to mountain Mare Monti.
The circuit now includes several races: in Morocco, Brazil, Croatia and Island. They all run through Unesco-listed nature reserves.
Participants run through magnificent locations, whilst coming to the aid of deprived populations and preserving astonishing natural heritage sites. The initiative provides fusion of sporting performance with humanitarian, environmental and economical development.
In November 2007, the Fondation Jean-Luc Lagardère made it possible to fund a well in Douar Igli, in Morocco's Middle Atlas.
On October 12, 2008, each group of runners in this Middle Atlas race made it possible to install six school libraries in the remote Berber provinces they travelled through, thanks to the support of the Fondation Jean-Luc Lagardère and to the cooperation of Hachette International and its Moroccan subsidiary La Librairie Nationale.
