Fondation Jean-Luc Lagardère Talent Grant Winner, and also Getty Foundation Bursary winner, at New York, photographer Sarah Caron travels the world. Film-maker Patrick Chauvel followed her for over a year. He has made an exceptional documantary about her with the Fondation's support.
She is a photographer. The world’s greatest journals publish her photo-documentaries. Her vision of the world can be seen through others in each of her photos. She never ceases travelling the globe in search of the untouchable in order to better understand everyone’s story. He is also a photographer. A war reporter to be accurate. He is also a writer and documentary author. He has been close to death several times but doesn’t think about it. His passion carries him: especially that of witnessing and telling other people’s stories. She is called Sarah Caron. He is Patrick Chauvel.
Right from their first meeting, Sarah Caron’s personality and work, a mix between art and journalism, marked Patrick Chauvel. Shared passions, the same enthusiasm and commitment, same search for theabsolute, same desires to travel the world… Patrick Chauvel decided to accompany Sarah Caron. For once, he would not be filming conflict but an uncompromising documentary on a photographer looking for the stories behind the History. Cambodia, Thailand, Egypt, Palestine, Mexico... five trips in twelve months related in one and a half hours in Patrick Chauvel’s
documentary; a way of interrogating a life’s work and the sense of a quest that is never achieved.
The Fondation Jean-Luc Lagardère gave Patrick Chauvel the means to complete the final edit of his documentary. An initiative that is in line with the concept behind the new Talent Grant for a documentary writer that was created this year.

The exhibition, which is called “Itinerrance” and was organized on the initiative of the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation and the French Institute of New-York (FIAF), highlights the very personal work of Sarah Caron: a tour of the world which is full of humanity, with surprising action photographs, which were often taken at night.
Sarah Caron works on current news topics as well as long-distance projects: “The wandering souls of Cambodia”, “The Muslim rebellion in Southern Thailand”, “The Ghurkhas”…
As part of “Itinerrance”, Patrick Chauvel’s exceptional documentary about Sarah Caron, Sarah’s Eyes, will be shown for the first time at the FIAF.
According to its maker, this documentary is “a journey around the world, the bit between the teeth, striking a balance between art and a narrative reaching to the future.”
