AWARD-WINNING PROJECT: The production of a special report from Brazil on professional soccer-player Susanna Werner, a forward on the Fluminense women’s football team, a fashion model and a presenter for TV Gobo – not to mention the ex-girlfriend of Ronaldo.
Marie Hélène Martin is a freelance journalist on the editorial teams of such varied publications as Nouvel Observateur, Notre Epoque, Libération and Vital, among others. She affirms that she is known for her “scathing, outrageous writing style,” and admits that she was “a bit of an opportunist as regards the 1998 World Cup.” In the feverish excitement of the event, everyone was fighting over the story of her meeting with Suzanna Werner, the quintessential symbol of Brazil. To succeed in talking about women’s football in Brazil when everyone else was betting on Zidane was quite a feat – though quite typical of Marie-Hélène Martin. The Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation gave her project a special award. “Not only is Werner a forward on the Fluminense women’s team, but, even more important, she was the girlfriend of Ronaldo, the highest-paid football player in the world. She personifies Brazilian glamour as a fashion model. She also works for TV Globo, the channel that mirrors all the excesses of Brazilian society.” Her story was eventually published in Paris Match and the Nouvel Observateur. With a perfect mastery of the language of Pessoa, Marie-Hélène Martin returns to Brazil on a regular basis. On the trail of Pelé, Niemeyer or Bernard Lavilliers? Who knows? She now works as a journalist for Libération.
