AWARD-WINNING PROJECT: writing a mini-series of eight 52-minute episodes adapted from Peau de lapin (Rabbit Skin), a novel by Nicolas Kieffer (Seuil). This fantasy-thriller takes place mainly in a psychiatric clinic located in the centre of a forest in the French Alps.
The two writers seemed predisposed to understand each other from the outset, and that is exactly what happened. When they met at the Fémis school of audiovisual studies (where they were both working on short films), Emmanuel was just leaving the Essec business school and the bubbly world of Coca-Cola, where he had done his placement. As for Sébastien, he had just finished a Master's in contemporary history.
It was their shared passion for American television fantasy series that drew them to embark on a joint project, Derrière le miroir (Behind the Mirror), a series of eight 52-minute episodes. "It’s a format that seems revolutionary to us in France, but it's very common in the United States," explain our two authors. They continue, "It is perfectly adapted to the medium of television, whose specific form of expression lies in very long stories."
The story itself is taken from Peau de Lapin (Rabbit Skin) by Nicolas Kieffer. Somewhere between The Shining, Kingdom Hospital and Twin Peaks, it takes us, with Virgile Godard, into a world that is close to reality, without its limitations and constraints, but with 62 deaths on the credits alongside the same number of alibis, a thousand-and-one intrigues and some crazy situations. "The insane offer interesting narrative potential," Emmanuel and Sébastien agree. "You can never tell whether it's art or just a mess." In this case, it's art, and good art at that. And our two scriptwriters still meet every week to continue the adventure, one forging ahead, the other refining the previous episodes, but each just as creative as the other. In brief, a story of two madmen, and one which is only just beginning.
